Commonly Asked

Questions

  • What is therapy with you like?
I’m not a stereotypically stoic or quiet therapist. In fact, you’ll find that our sessions are energetic and conversational, often filled with humor and moments of levity. I ask lots of questions so that I can understand you, and so that you can get to know yourself better. I am forthcoming in my observations, and work best with clients who are open to this. Part of my role as your therapist is to reflect what I see, help you confront limiting beliefs and challenge unhealthy behaviors. Facing difficult material is often upsetting, especially if there are areas of change that feel scary, out of reach, or things that you have gone to great lengths to avoid. I aim to be direct yet kind in helping you confront yourself.
  • What should I expect at my first session?
The first session(s) won’t feel like the rest of our sessions. At the initial appointment, we’ll go over some important paperwork together, and I’ll ask questions about what led you to starting therapy. We won’t ‘dive into’ any issues at this session, as I’ll first need to gather more information about you—your childhood, your development, current relationships, substance use, education/work experience etc. At your second session, we will lay out some explicit goals for your time in therapy, and I may ask some remaining/follow-up questions.
  • How often will we meet?
I see psychotherapy patients a minimum of once per week. Longer intervals between sessions make it challenging to work together in a way that leads to lasting change. Patients need time to reveal themselves, and a weekly cadence of sessions promotes a safe, structured and predictable environment for patients to let down various defenses, and begin to examine their life and their emotions. Couples & partnerships tend to meet with me every two or three weeks, typically for a longer 90-minute session.
  • How much does therapy with you cost?
My fee is $200/ 50 minute session. Payments can be made by cash, check, debit/credit cards and HSA/FSA cards.
  • Do you accept insurance?
I do not. Upon request, I'd be happy to provide you with an itemized receipt (aka a 'superbill') to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement. It is at the discretion of your insurance company whether they will reimburse you for out-of-network services.
  • Why don't you accept insurance?
I treat patient decision-making and quality of care with the utmost of respect and believe treatment decisions should be made by, and remain between, only the client and therapist. Therefore, I am not on third-party, managed care insurance panels and do not bill insurance companies directly. This allows maximum client freedom, confidentiality, and choice. Therapists and clients working under the constraints of a third-party/managed care insurance companies lose their ability to make joint decisions together regarding treatment and care. This is due to the third-party influence of the insurance contracts. For example, the type of treatment, frequency of treatment, and how long treatment lasts are all subject to the dictates of the contracts written by insurance companies.
  • Where are you located?
My office is located in the beautiful historical Churchill Building in downtown Madison, right on the Capitol Square. Take either elevator up to the 7th floor, make a right, then follow the hallway down to the end; it's the last office on the left. My other 'office' is online, for clients living outside of Madison.
